Where Is the Batch Code on YSL? The 2026 Guide to Lipstick, Fragrance and Foundation Dates

Brand Batch Codes•October 2026

YSL lipsticks and fragrances are among the most counterfeited beauty products, and the batch code is the fastest first filter. This guide covers where the code is printed on Saint Laurent products, how to check it, and the pitfalls to avoid.

Where is the batch code printed on YSL?

The YSL batch code is the product's identity mark — it is neither the barcode nor the SKU reference (the string starting with H). Common locations:

  • Lipsticks (Rouge Pur Couture / Volupte): sticker on the tube base, or visible on the inner mechanism; also on the outer carton
  • Fragrances: sticker or spray code on the bottle base, and on the outer carton
  • Foundations: bottle base or spray code on the bottle
  • Cushion compacts: compact base or the refill

What does a batch code look like?

It is usually a short alphanumeric string. The batch code does not visually reveal the production date — it is an encoded string that only makes sense against the brand's coding scheme, and brands change their schemes over time.

How to check the production date

1

Step 1: photograph the code

Lipsticks: tube base or carton bottom. Fragrances: sticker on the bottle base. Zoom in to confirm every character (O vs 0, I vs 1 are easy to misread).

2

Step 2: look it up with a tool

Open the BeautyChecker batch code checker, pick Yves Saint Laurent, enter the code, and the production date and remaining shelf life appear instantly.

3

Step 3: act on the result

Be careful with lipsticks that have less than a year left; return long-stocked fragrances if the alcohol has clearly evaporated and the scent changed.

Stop trying to decode it yourself

The 'Nth digit is the year' formulas floating around social media contradict each other, and one wrong step gives you the wrong date. Cosmetics batch codes have no industry-wide standard: schemes differ across brands within the same group, and even across production lines of the same brand. Self-decoding easily misjudges near-expiry products. We recommend a tool instead: the rules are maintained server-side and updated as brands adjust.

Shelf life reference and authenticity

CategoryUnopened shelf lifeAfter opening (PAO)
Lipsticks/lip glossabout 3 years12-18 months
Fragrancesabout 3-5 years24-36 months
Foundationsabout 3 years6-12 months
Cushion compactsabout 3 years6-12 months

Two common misconceptions

1. Batch code ≠ origin: the origin is printed on the packaging (Made in France, etc.); the batch code carries no origin information.

2. A valid batch code ≠ guaranteed authentic: counterfeiters print batch codes too. Judge authenticity by texture, scent, finishing quality, and above all a trustworthy purchase channel.
