The 2026 Guide to Luxury Cosmetic Batch Code Rules

2026-05-08

Why does every brand have a different batch code?

There is no global standard for cosmetic batch codes — every group, and even every brand, has its own encoding rules. To decode the letters and digits on the bottom of the bottle, you first need to know which group the brand belongs to.

This guide rounds up the batch code rules of the major cosmetics groups, covering most of the brands you can buy at counters and duty-free stores.

Estée Lauder Companies (ELC)

Brands: Estée Lauder, MAC, Clinique, La Mer, Origins, Bobbi Brown, Tom Ford Beauty, Aveda, and more

Batch code format: usually 3 mixed alphanumeric characters, such as A93, B01, C88

There is no fixed position in this group's batch codes that tells you the date directly, and the printing varies from line to line. The quickest way to confirm when your bottle was made is to look it up with the tool.

L'Oréal Group

Brands: Lancôme, L'Oréal Paris, Maybelline, Kiehl's, YSL, Armani Beauty, Shu Uemura, Biotherm, Helena Rubinstein, and more

Batch code format: usually 5-6 characters, such as 40U600, 38S701

Here again there is no fixed position you can read the date from, and the printing differs between production lines. To find out when your bottle was made, use the lookup tool.

Note: some Lancôme batch codes are embossed on the bottom of the bottle rather than printed on the box, so it is worth checking both.

Shiseido Group

Brands: Shiseido, NARS, Clé de Peau Beauté (CPB), Anessa, and more

Batch code format: usually 4-5 characters, such as 9251M, 0123N

Once again there is no fixed position in the code that reveals the date directly, and different lines print it differently. The tool is the most reliable way to confirm the production date.

LVMH Group

Brands: Dior, Givenchy, Guerlain, Benefit, Make Up For Ever, Fresh, and more

Batch code format: usually 4 characters, such as 9A01, 0B23

The code has no fixed position that tells you the date, and the printing varies by production line. To confirm when your bottle was produced, just run it through the tool.

Chanel

Chanel batch codes are 4 digits, but they are encrypted — the production date cannot be derived directly through simple rules.

If you have bought a Chanel product, check the production date through Chanel's official customer service or a counter, or submit a query with the BeautyChecker batch code tool.

Amorepacific Group

Brands: Sulwhasoo, Laneige, Innisfree, Etude, and more

Korean brands usually print the production date or the expiry date (YYYY.MM.DD format) directly on the packaging instead of hiding it in a batch code. Check the bottle or the box for the Korean words 제조 (manufactured) or 까지 (until/expiry).

Procter & Gamble (P&G)

Brands: SK-II, Olay, and more

The SK-II batch code is 10 digits and contains production date information. Please refer to the lookup result for the exact date.

Avène / La Roche-Posay / Vichy (French dermo-cosmetics)

French dermo-cosmetic brands (Avène, La Roche-Posay, Vichy) usually use letter+digit batch codes, but the rules vary by brand and change frequently. Use the lookup tool to get results directly.
