How to Read the Production Date of Duty-Free Cosmetics: The 2026 Guide to Batch Codes in China, Korea, and Japan

2026-05-08

The duty-free "blind spot"

Buying cosmetics at duty-free shops has a few defining traits: cheaper, more selection, but no local-language label. Especially with the "blind buy" model of online duty-free platforms (CDF, Sunrise Duty Free, Lotte, and the like) — you simply can't inspect the batch code on the bottom of the bottle before paying.

That's why inspecting the goods and checking the batch code the moment they arrive should be standard practice for every duty-free shopper.

Where is the batch code at duty-free shops? Same as everywhere else

Duty-free cosmetics may lack a local-language label, but the batch code sits exactly where it does at retail counters:

  • Bottom of the bottle (most common)
  • Crimped end of the tube
  • Bottom of the outer box
  • Sticker on the back of the bottle

The encoding rules are identical too — for the same brand, a batch code reads the same whether you bought the product at a retail counter or a duty-free shop.

What to watch out for at each duty-free channel

Sunrise Duty Free (China)

  • Pickup at departure: you can inspect the batch code right after collecting your order and confirm the dates before checking in
  • Online Sunrise Duty Free: inspect on arrival; if something is near expiry, contact customer service right away
  • Some Sunrise Duty Free sets mix products from different batches — check each one to be safe

CDF Member Shopping (Hainan offshore duty-free)

  • Hainan duty-free channels have shipped at high volume in recent years with fast inventory turnover, so most products are relatively fresh
  • But bestsellers often sell out, and restocked batches can be uneven
  • Check the batch code after every delivery and keep a screenshot for your records

Korean duty-free shops (Lotte/Shilla/Shinsegae)

  • Korean duty-free channels typically run tax-paid warehouses that ship products as soon as they leave the factory — the fastest turnover of all
  • But popular shades and limited editions may need to be pulled from domestic Korean stock, so dates can be less fresh
  • Korean domestic brands (Sulwhasoo, Laneige, Whoo) bought at Korean duty-free shops generally have the freshest dates

DFS (global duty-free: Japan/Hong Kong/Singapore, etc.)

  • DFS stores span the globe, and inventory turnover differs by location, so dates can vary
  • Japanese brands at Japan DFS (Shiseido, CPB, SK-II) usually have the best dates
  • Hong Kong DFS has seen fewer tourists in recent years, so some products may have sat in inventory longer

How to avoid near-expiry products when shopping duty-free

Purchase methodAdvice
In-store duty-freePick up the bottle and check the code on the bottom first; photograph it with your phone for a quick lookup
Online duty-free platformsCheck each item as soon as it arrives and contact customer service immediately about near-expiry products
Reseller buying at duty-free shopsAsk the reseller to photograph the batch codes before shipping; check first, then let them send
Buying sets/gift boxesEach item in a set may carry a different batch code — inspect them one by one

Is a "near-expiry" duty-free purchase normal?

Different categories carry different freshness expectations:

  • Sunscreen, vitamin C serums: look for a production date within the last 6 months, since their post-opening life is short
  • Face creams, lotions: anything produced within the last 1-2 years is acceptable
  • Lipsticks, lip balms: a production date within the last 2 years is usually fine
  • Perfume: anything within 3 years is perfectly normal; well-stored perfume holds up even longer

If you find less than a year of shelf life remaining (unopened), contact the duty-free platform's customer service to request a return or exchange.

Your duty-free package has arrived? Check the batch codes first

Too tedious to check one by one? Pick a brand, enter the batch code, and get the production date in one second — see how fresh it really is
