The Complete Guide to Cosmetic Shelf Life in 2026: Unopened vs. After Opening

2026-03-30

Two kinds of shelf life

Cosmetics have two different shelf life concepts, and many people confuse them:

  • Unopened shelf life — counted from the production date, usually 3 years. This is how long the product keeps its quality while sealed.
  • Period after opening (PAO) — the recommended usage window counted from the first time you open the product, typically 6-24 months.

How to read the PAO symbol

The PAO symbol is an open-jar icon with a number of months on it — for example, "12M" means use within 12 months of opening. The symbol is usually printed on the back or bottom of the packaging.

  • 6M = 6 months after opening
  • 12M = 12 months after opening
  • 24M = 24 months after opening

What affects shelf life

  • Storage environment — heat, humidity, and direct sunlight speed up product degradation
  • How you use it — fingers touching the product directly introduce bacteria and shorten the usage window
  • Packaging type — pump packaging is more hygienic than open jars and keeps longer
  • Ingredient profile — products with active ingredients like vitamin C or retinol oxidize and go off more easily

Storage tips

  • Store in a cool, dry place — avoid the hot, humid bathroom
  • Close the cap tightly after use to limit air exposure
  • Use a spatula or pump whenever possible instead of fingers
  • Note the opening date so you can track the usage window
