Where Is the Batch Code on Shiseido? The 2026 Guide to Ultimune, Sunscreen and Serum Dates

Brand Batch Codes•October 2026

Ultimune serum and the Clear Sunscreen are overseas-shopping favorites, and the Japanese domestic version looks nearly identical to the international one — so check the date before buying. This guide covers where the Shiseido batch code is printed, how to check it, and the pitfalls to avoid.

Where is the batch code printed on Shiseido?

The Shiseido batch code is the product's identity mark — it is not the barcode. Common locations:

  • Serums (Ultimune, etc.): embossed bottle base or spray code on the bottle
  • Sunscreens (Clear Sunscreen Stick, etc.): bottle base or spray code, also on the outer carton
  • Lotions/emulsions: embossed bottle base or the outer carton
  • Tubes: crimped end of the tube

What does a batch code look like?

It is usually a short alphanumeric string, embossed or spray-printed. The batch code does not visually reveal the production date — it is an encoded string that only makes sense against the brand's coding scheme, and brands change their schemes over time.

How to check the production date

1

Step 1: photograph the code

Check the bottle base or carton bottom, and zoom in to confirm every character (O vs 0, I vs 1 are easy to misread).

2

Step 2: look it up with a tool

Open the BeautyChecker batch code checker, pick Shiseido, enter the code, and the production date and remaining shelf life appear instantly.

3

Step 3: act on the result

Sunscreen and vitamin C products are short-lived categories — be careful with anything under a year left; consider exchanges for near-expiry serums.

Stop trying to decode it yourself

The 'Nth digit is the year' formulas floating around social media contradict each other, and one wrong step gives you the wrong date. Cosmetics batch codes have no industry-wide standard: schemes differ across brands within the same group, and even across production lines of the same brand. Self-decoding easily misjudges near-expiry products. We recommend a tool instead: the rules are maintained server-side and updated as brands adjust.

Shelf life reference and authenticity

CategoryUnopened shelf lifeAfter opening (PAO)
Serums (Ultimune, etc.)about 3 years6-12 months
Sunscreensabout 3 years6-12 months; best used within the year
Lotions/emulsionsabout 3 yearsaround 12 months
Eye creamsabout 3 years6-12 months

Two common misconceptions

1. Batch code ≠ origin: the origin is printed on the packaging (Made in Japan, etc.); the batch code carries no origin information.

2. A valid batch code ≠ guaranteed authentic: the Japanese domestic and international versions look similar — judge authenticity by texture, scent, packaging quality, and above all a trustworthy purchase channel.
