How to Read Estée Lauder Batch Codes in 2026: Production Date & Shelf Life Explained

2026-07-05 (updated)

Estée Lauder is one of the world's largest cosmetics groups, home to MAC, Clinique, La Mer, Bobbi Brown, Tom Ford Beauty, Jo Malone, and many other well-known brands. The good news: these brands all share the same coding system — just pick the right brand in the lookup tool.

Where to find the batch code?

On Estée Lauder Group products, the batch code is usually printed in one of these places:

  • Bottled products: embossed on the bottom or on the back of the label
  • Boxed products: bottom of the outer packaging
  • Tubed products: crimped end of the tube

The batch code is generally 3 mixed alphanumeric characters, for example A93, B01, K41.

Batch codes are printed in different ways and in different places depending on the production line and the year, so rather than guessing digit by digit, just type the code from the base of the product into the lookup tool — it returns the production date and the period after opening together.

Not sure about a batch code? Enter it into the BeautyChecker online lookup tool and it will be decoded automatically.

How to calculate shelf life

Shelf life rules for Estée Lauder Group products:

  • Unopened shelf life: usually 36 months (3 years)
  • Period after opening (PAO): usually 12 months (see the PAO symbol on the packaging — the "12M" inside the open-lid jar icon)

In practice, that means 36 months from the production date while the product stays unopened, and 12 months once it is opened, following the PAO symbol on the packaging.

Shared rules across the group

The following brands all belong to the Estée Lauder Group and share the same coding system:

  • Estée Lauder
  • MAC
  • Clinique
  • La Mer
  • Bobbi Brown
  • Tom Ford Beauty
  • Jo Malone London
  • Origins
  • Aveda

In other words, whether your product is from MAC, Clinique or La Mer, you can select the matching brand in the same lookup tool and get the production date and the period after opening straight away.

FAQ

What if my batch code has only 2 or 4 characters?

The standard Estée Lauder Group batch code is 3 characters. If yours is a different length, it may be another kind of code (such as a shade number or SKU) — look for another 3-character alphanumeric combination on the bottom of the bottle or the packaging.

Do I have to work out the letters and digits myself?

No. Simply enter the code from the base of the product as it is, and the lookup tool returns the production date and the period after opening — no digit-by-digit guesswork needed.

Are duty-free and counter versions coded the same way?

Yes. No matter the purchase channel (counter, duty-free, official website, overseas), Estée Lauder Group products follow exactly the same batch code rules.

Can a batch code tell me where the product was made?

No. The 3-character batch code only contains month and year information, not the country of origin. The origin is usually marked separately on the packaging (e.g. "Made in USA", "Made in UK").
