How to Read Cosmetic Batch Codes in 2026: Decode the Code on the Bottom of Your Bottle

2026-03-28

What is a batch code?

A batch code is a set of characters printed on the packaging by the cosmetics manufacturer during production, usually a mix of letters and digits, 3-8 characters long. It records the production batch information of the product — most importantly, the production date.

A batch code is not the same as a barcode. A barcode is a globally unified product identifier, while a batch code is an internal production mark set by each manufacturer — every brand has its own encoding rules.

Where to find the batch code?

The batch code is usually printed in one of these places:

  • Bottom of the bottle or tube — the most common location, printed or embossed
  • Bottom of the outer box — usually matches the code on the bottle
  • On the product label — some products print it on the back label
  • Side or back of the bottle — a practice used by a few brands

Batch code rules of major brands

Estée Lauder Companies (ELC)

Brands include Estée Lauder, MAC, Clinique, La Mer, and more. The batch code is usually 3 characters, in a format like A93.

What each part of the code stands for is defined by the group itself, and the printing can change from one production line or year to the next, so memorised shortcuts often lead to the wrong date. If you want to know when your bottle was made, entering the code in a lookup tool is the more reliable route.

L'Oréal Group

Brands include Lancôme, L'Oréal, Maybelline, Kiehl's, and more. The batch code is usually 4-6 characters, such as 40U600.

Even within a single group, different code systems are in use and the layout varies between factories, so the reference tables floating around online often do not match what is printed on your product. A quick lookup is the faster way to pin down the date on your bottle.

Brands with encrypted batch codes

Some brands (such as SK-II and Chanel) have encrypted their batch codes, so the production date cannot be derived from the code alone. For these products, check through the brand's official channels.

Why check the batch code?

  • Confirm shelf life — cosmetics generally have a 3-year shelf life; the batch code tells you how much is left
  • Spot counterfeits — if the batch code format is wrong, it may be fake
  • Cross-border shopping verification — for products bought overseas or through daigou, the batch code confirms the production date
