How to Read SK-II Batch Codes in 2026: Production Date & Shelf Life Explained

2026-11-01 (updated)

SK-II belongs to P&G and is made in Japan. Its star product, the Facial Treatment Essence (the famous 'Miracle Water'), is expensive and circulates heavily through overseas-retail and daigou channels — checking the production date on arrival is the first step to avoiding near-expiry products.

Where to find the batch code?

On SK-II products, the batch code is usually printed in one of these places:

  • Bottled products: spray code on the bottle base (Facial Treatment Essence, R.N.A. Power, SKINPOWER included)
  • Boxed products: bottom or side of the outer packaging

The typical SK-II batch code is a 10-character alphanumeric string. The codes on the bottle and the carton usually match — trust the one on the bottle.

Why you shouldn't decode SK-II codes by hand

SK-II is one of the few brands whose batch code scheme is not fully public: the 10-character code does contain production information, but the scheme has been adjusted across production lines and years, and the formulas circulating on social media disagree with each other — the same code can decode to different dates.

Type the code into the lookup tool and the production date and the period after opening come back together — the rules are maintained server-side and updated as brands adjust, which beats memorizing formulas.

How to calculate shelf life

Shelf life rules for SK-II products:

  • Unopened shelf life: usually 36 months (3 years); some Japan-domestic versions print the expiry date directly on the packaging
  • Period after opening (PAO): check the PAO symbol on the packaging — usually 12 months for the Facial Treatment Essence and creams

Use the Facial Treatment Essence within 12 months of opening. For overseas purchases with less than a year of shelf life left, confirm with the seller first. Japanese cosmetics sometimes print only a '製造番号' (production number) with no date — those can only be decoded from the batch code.

Authenticity note

SK-II is one of the most counterfeited beauty brands. The batch code works as a first filter:

  • Wrong code format: if the base code is clearly not 10 characters, or the bottle has no code at all, be highly suspicious
  • Same code across bottles: multiple bottles from one daigou batch carrying the identical code is also a red flag
  • A valid batch code ≠ guaranteed authentic: the code is only the first filter — also check texture, scent, packaging quality, and above all a trustworthy channel

FAQ

Is a 9- or 11-character SK-II code normal?

Current codes are mostly 10 characters. A very different length usually means a shade number, a GWP mini, or another kind of code. Look for another 10-character combination on the bottle base, or try the code you found in the lookup tool.

Where is the Facial Treatment Essence batch code?

On the base of the bottle — usually a 10-character spray code. The bottom of the carton carries the same code.

Do OLAY and SK-II use the same batch code rules?

Both belong to P&G, but their coding systems are not the same. Always select the correct brand in the lookup tool — don't check an OLAY code as SK-II or vice versa.

Are duty-free and counter versions coded the same way?

Yes. No matter the purchase channel (counter, duty-free, official website, overseas), SK-II products follow exactly the same batch code rules.
